Other Regional Plans

The Regional Planning Guidelines for the West Region 2010-2022 promote the objectives of other regional plans which include the Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management Studies, the River Basin Management Plans and the Regional Waste Management Plan.

The national Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) programme commenced in 2011 to meet the requirements of the European Union Floods Directive.

The CFRAM programme will develop a medium to long-term strategy for the reduction and management of flood risk in Ireland.

Two CFRAM Studies are being prepared in the West Regional Authority area.  They are the Shannon and Western CFRAMs and it is expected that the Studies will be completed by December, 2015.

The European Union Water Framework Directive establishes a framework for the protection of all waters including rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal waters and groundwater, and their dependent wildlife/habitats under one piece of environmental legislation.

Ireland has been divided into eight River Basin Districts (RBDs).  The RBDs serve as administrative areas where local authorities coordinate their water management actions.

Two RBDs are found in the West Regional Authority area.  They are the Shannon and Western RBDs.

The Replacement Connacht Waste Management Plan 2006 covers the local authorities within the West Region.  The Plan has a particular emphasis on waste reduction and the reuse, recycling and disposal of residual waste in the most appropriate way.

The 2006 Plan is being evaluated in 2012 and will be revised or replaced to meet the requirements of the European Union Waste Framework Directive.
